Just a birthmark

Sometimes a birthmark is just a birthmark. Benjamin had his ultrasound yesterday and the doctor called this morning and said that everything looked normal. I have to admit that I was surprised when the doctor said that everything looked fine, I really expected to be told that he had Spina Bifida Occulta. Thank you to those of you that said prayers for him. The picture is of Caleb right after his bath and Benjamin laying on his chest. It was so sweet, Ben got so still and quiet and probably would have fallen asleep on Caleb if we had left him there long enough.

Here is a video that Glenn took of Benjamin playing with his rattle.

Taking it easy

Caleb has had a cold this weekend so he has been taking it easy. He has been doing a lot of coloring the past couple of days. I love watching him color, he really concentrates and he actually does pretty well at staying in the lines. He used to just scribble all over the place and now he tries to color on the actual picture. Yesterday when he was coloring he said "I'm working really hard." That is so true of everything that Caleb does, he is truly a hard worker. There have been so many things that haven't come easily for him but he works hard until he gets it. He is such an inspiration to me. I am blown away daily by him. I'm just going to brag about him for a minute: He is so smart! He knows how to spell his name, he knows his phone number (including area code), he knows all of his letters (upper and lower case) and the sound that each letter makes, he can count by 10's (10, 20 30....) and he is learning to count by 2's. I don't know about you but that impresses me...of course I'm a little biased. We are just so proud of him and we are so blessed to have him as a son. And of course, Benjamin too. On a side note, Benjamin slept until 3:15am in his bassinet before he woke up and wanted to sleep on me. Woo hoo! I see a light at the end of the tunnel! God sure has blessed us with 2 beautiful boys.

Benjamin's checkup

Benjamin had his 4 month checkup yesterday. He weighs 10 pounds and 12 ounces, and is 23 inches long. He still isn't plotting on the growth chart but that is to be expected since he was 2 months early. The doctor was pleased with his growth and weight gain. There are a couple of small concerns. He might have an inguinal hernia which could mean surgery to repair it but the doctor is just going to keep an eye on it for now (Caleb had surgery for the same thing when he was 6 weeks old). Benjamin also has this birth mark on his lower back that has been bothering me for awhile. It is one of those things that I wouldn't have thought twice about if it weren't for the fact that Caleb has Spina Bifida. I showed the doctor and she confirmed what I thought, that it might be Spina Bifida Occulta. Let me start by saying the SBO is nothing like what Caleb has, it doesn't even compare. If you want to know what SBO is then visit this site. SBO is actually relatively common and most people that have it don't know they have it unless they have an x-ray of their back. So Benjamin is having an ultrasound next Wednesday to see if they see anything. We aren't terribly concerned at this point, the ultrasound is just to let us know if he has it. It could be SBO or it could just be a birth mark. Here are a couple of pictures of Benjamin. He absolutely loves bath time, he can be screaming his head off but as soon as his hiney hits the water he gets quiet. He kicks like crazy and splashes water everywhere. He's doing good with his "tummy time". Caleb will get down on the floor with Benjamin and talk to him, he softens his voice when he talks to Ben...it is sooo sweet.

4 months

Benjamin is 4 months old today. I managed to get a photo of him smiling...and giving the "peace" sign with his fingers. He is getting to be a lot of fun, he interacts more and more all the time. He coos and "talks" to us, it is so cute. Caleb just loves him and will get down on the floor and talk to Benjamin. The other day Benjamin was tooting quite a bit (he is so gassy, it sounds like he has a motor boat in his diaper) and Caleb said "What's that smell? It smells like pancakes." It was so funny. I guess Benjamin's poop smells like pancakes to Caleb. Benjamin has his 4 month check up on Thursday so we will find out how much he has grown.

School Field Trip

Caleb's class had a field trip today. The kids got to go to this place that has several bounce houses, all indoors. Glenn and I went along to offer some help. Caleb was such a big boy, he rode the school bus to the bounce house place! I was so proud of him, I was worried that he would be scared but he did great! He had so much fun on this field trip. Glenn took Caleb into every single bounce house and slid down several slides with him. Everyone went to McDonald's for lunch and Caleb devoured his cheeseburger and apple slices. It was a fun-filled morning and both Glenn and Caleb are now taking naps. Benjamin missed all the fun, he slept the entire time!

He Is Risen

"On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee; 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.'"

Benjamin pics

Here are a couple of recent pictures of Benjamin. He is doing really well. I'm not sure how much he weighs but I suspect that it is over 10 pounds. He is starting to fill out and get some meat on those bones. He has been sleeping until about 5-5:30 am this past week, which is wonderful! He will only sleep in his bassinet for about 3 hours and then he wants to sleep on me or Glenn the rest of the night. It's not an ideal way for us to sleep but we are so tired that we just let him sleep laying on us so we can get some sleep!

Bowl-A-Thon

Today was the annual Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser, benefiting our local Spina Bifida Association. Caleb had an absolute blast! He was moving around so fast that we could barely get a picture of him. He bowled a 57...he takes after his mommy. Thank you to those of you that pledged money, we really appreciate your generosity.

Easter Picnic

Yesterday was the annual Easter picnic, sponsored by the local Spina Bifida Association. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and the four of us had a great time. This is a wonderful park because it is designed for kids with mobility issues so there are ramps that allow Caleb to wheel right onto the play equipment. It is wonderful, I wish all playgrounds were built like this. It was a fun-filled day with face painting, an egg hunt, and a picnic. Caleb loved seeing the Bunny and was quick to give her a hug and follow her around the park. I always enjoy getting Caleb around other kids that have Spina Bifida, he is able to see other kids using wheelchairs and walkers and wearing braces. He always seems interested when he sees other kids in wheelchairs. Benjamin slept through most of the festivities but he did wake up at the end and I was able to get a couple of pictures of him.
