Starting a business...

Unless you are new here, you know that I have made cardboard creations for Caleb's Halloween costumes over the years. Unless you are really new here, you know that these cardboard creations received quite a bit of attention last October. It was a wild ride for sure but we were old news by November 1st!

I've been told more than once that I should make wheelchair costumes and sell them. I've always just brushed that off because I'm not the only one that makes cardboard creations for wheelchairs...and I'm certainly not the best. I think what I do is relatively simple and easy for anyone to do. But not everyone wants to do it. Some folks would just like to buy it.

So after much encouragement from some sweet ladies and small business owners, I've decided to start a business.

I've read, researched, taken notes....then read, researched and taken more notes. I'm still at the very beginning stages of this process but I do have a very doable plan. I really believe this could be successful. I might not make millions or anything but I think I'll sell a few costumes at least. Plus I have a lot of fun making these creations and I'll be providing something that isn't available. I'm excited about it. My brain is very busy these days with ideas and possibilities. I can't wait to really get started.

I decided to "share" my journey with this business on Facebook. You can see the Wheelie Awesome Costumes page by clicking here. I'm just using this page as a platform to share the process and hopefully create some anticipation for when products become available. I'll be working on some creations very soon. So stay tuned...

The boys hit the ramps again last night. I love that we have WCMX so close to us. It's such a fun sport and I love watching all the kids get on the ramps. We are very blessed to have RISE Adaptive Sports in our area.

All suited up and ready to go.

As always, Benjamin makes his own fun on the ramps.

He's so cool...he knows it too.

Benjamin decided to get his own set of wheels this time. He took that scooter all over the place. He is now asking for his own skateboard.

Some fast flying down the ramps.

Zoo with friends

We are taking a little break from school and enjoying the beautiful spring weather. We made a trip to meet up with some friends at the zoo. Imagine 6 boys and 3 moms...the moms were outnumbered!

Benjamin is as tall as an Emperor Penguin.

If there is a fence...boys will try and climb it.

Feeding the giraffes.
Funny story here: I handed all the kids these giant crackers (giraffe food) so they could feed the giraffes. I turn around and Benjamin takes a huge bite out of the cracker! He was pretty upset when he found out that he had just eaten giraffe food! He wasn't the only one though, I saw several other kids doing the same thing.

My little bird lover.

10 years ago today Glenn and I were sitting in a doctor's office hearing the words "I'm sorry to tell you this but your baby has Spina Bifida and hydrocephalus." More words followed like "bound to" and "mentally retarded" and "termination is an option". I know what a broken heart feels like. I know fear. I know what it's like to cry until there truly aren't any tears left. I know what it's like to fall on my knees and pray like I never have before. Oh, if I had only known then what I know now...I wouldn't have been so scared. If I had only known how amazing, handsome, funny and smart he would be. If I had only known that while SB is part of his life, it isn't his life. If I had only known how SB would change and shape our family into something better. If I had only known the huge SB family I would have and the support and encouragement I would feel. If I had only known that this would not be a journey I would walk alone. Is it easy? No. But you can't appreciate the view until you've climbed the mountain. There is great blessings in the trials. The world is better because Caleb is in it. It's a privilege to be his mom and I'm better because of it. He's pretty awesome ya'll.

Basketball Tournament

Caleb's wheelchair basketball team had a local tournament this weekend. It was nice to have a tournament that we didn't have to travel out of state to get to!

A little pre-game pep talk from Coach.

I love this picture of these boys all lined up.

He is so close to  making a basket. So. Close.

This team played hard.

This little guy was such a trooper the entire day. We were at the gym for about 9 hours and he did so great. I was so proud of him.

Raptors, and Lemurs, and Pythons...Oh my!

Our city hosted a couple of special animal events last week. The first event was a chance to see some birds of prey up close. The Raptor Center we visited last summer came out to show off some of their birds.
Caleb was so excited to see the birds that we got to the park far too early. We killed some time by the pond.

The boys listening intently.

Photo-bombed by an American Kestrel.

We also got a chance to see CritterMan and a collection of unusual critters.

Caleb was the only kid brave enough to touch this guy.

The Lemur was a favorite with both boys.

Python! Eeek!

Caleb got the chance to hit the ramps yesterday. He had a blast of course.

A little warm up beforehand.

Benjamin had his own kind of fun. We brought his scooter but he was content just running up the ramps.

Look at that smile....well, you can't really see his mouth very well but his eyes say it all.

Preparing for his American Ninja Warrior audition.

Mission: A service dog for Caleb...quick update

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that we were knee-deep in the process of applying for a service dog for Caleb. Well, we just got a little deeper into the process! We passed the phone interview and have now moved to the second to the last step; the professional reference form. This form has to be filled out by either a doctor, physical therapist or counselor. The form will then be sent back to CCI for review. The final step would be a personal interview with Caleb and I.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up...but I can almost see Caleb's name on that waiting list!
