Coming soon: Faces of Spina Bifida

October is Spina Bifida Awareness month. If you are a long-time follower of this blog then you know I used to do a "Faces of Spina Bifida" throughout the month of October. I would feature different kids with SB every day of the month, often 2 or more kids per day. It was a lot of fun but a lot of work. I haven't done it in a few years but have decided to tackle the project again this year!

Faces of Spina Bifida will start on October 1st and run daily throughout the month.

If you would like to participate (kids, teens, adults with SB welcome!) then click the "Contact me" button on the left.

CCI DogFest

This past weekend was the Canine Companions for Independence DogFest. We raised $1,720 for CCI!

The boys were so excited about the event that they woke up at 6 am that morning. They couldn't wait to see all the dogs. And we did see a lot of dogs.

Caleb spent quite a bit of time at the "Hug-a-Pup" booth. There were a couple of dogs in training that he was able to love on. The yellow vests mean the dog is in training. They graduate to the blue vest if they pass the training with flying colors. We chatted with a couple of puppy raisers while we were there. The puppy raisers take the puppies for about 18 months before they go to CCI for the last 6 months of intensive training. It was interesting to learn that some of the dogs don't graduate the program. The standards are so high that some dogs, even after all the training, don't make the cut. These dogs are then offered back to their puppy raisers where they can be a pet.

Lovin' on a pup.

In between petting dogs and eating snow cones, Benjamin did some tree climbing.

Thanks to everyone that donated in Caleb's name. It was a privilege to raise money for this amazing organization.

WCMX

We took the boys to a WCMX event this past Saturday. They were excited to hit the ramps...and see Wheelz in action.

He's wheelie awesome!

This kid was non-stop on the ramps too. He was such a blur the entire time I could barely get a single picture of him.
Watching Wheelz do his stuff.

He is so fun to watch.

B-ball season starts again

Caleb's wheelchair basketball team started their season this past weekend. He had his first practice this past Saturday (good-bye sleeping in on Saturday mornings). Despite the early practice time, I was anxious for the season to start back up. I've missed seeing the kids and watching Caleb do his thing on the court.

Caleb decided to kick the season off right by making not one, but TWO baskets! His first baskets ya'll!! I was so excited. I ran onto the court screaming and gave him a big kiss. I may have embarrassed him. And he may have told me to never do that again. Fair enough.

I didn't get the first shot on video but I did catch the second. Here ya go!

It's going to be a great season.

Toothless Benjamin

Despite my wishes that he stay my baby, Benjamin has decided to lose not one, but two, baby teeth this week.

This one fell out Monday.

This one fell out Friday.

I love, love, love that cute little gap! I'm so sad because his big boy teeth are already pushing through so that baby gap won't last long.

As you know, Caleb recently found out that he will be receiving a Skilled Companion dog through Canine Companions for Independence. CCI is currently building a new training facility here in Texas. We are raising money for CCI as part of the their Dog Fest Walk'n Roll. You can click the link below to make a donation. Caleb would love to have your support.
